The Year of the Ox

As many of my Chinese friends celebrate the Year of the OX with their traditional reunion dinners, red packets, tossing of the noodles, mandarin oranges, fire crackers and more so... it gives me a time to put things in perspective as we approach February.

The Govt has released its Budget for 2009. The emphasis is on stimulating businesses : Hence, the need to share the business risk, manpower costs and so on. PM Lee mentioned that it will be better to implement one huge action plan and see how it goes instead of implementing steps of smaller magnitude. Well, rite now, the aims of each package justify its expenditure. We can only see how much are employers going to heed all this advice.

Had an opportunity to be an MC recently for a forum conducted by the NTU SIFE. Strange how as the audience sets the tone and mood for the event. Even before I could finish introducing my final speaker, they had already started applauding. Well was just looking thru some websites on improving myself as an MC. Here goes.

1) Be aware of what your role is : U are not the star!! U are a facilitator for the true stars.

2) Know your introductions of the speakers WELL enough.

3) Keep your presence and speeches succinct

4) Smooth transitions are necessary

5) Its the MC's job to keep the program moving on time

6) Being an MC is hard at first but gets easy as you master the audience and occasion.

The Government Syndrome..

I think many fellow locals of my humble and hardworking nation arent very happy with our founder.

They arent happy that our CPF contributions are high so that limits our disposable income.

They arent happy that the prices of housing are so high that they are sucked into long term loans by banks that they have to service for the rest of their life.

They arent happy that the certificate to purchase is based on so call market forces such that one moment its $1 and on the other hand, its $22,000.

Who are the ppple who are really happy in Singapore?

The students are not coz they are suppressed. They are grades chasers. They see the A+ in the subject and not the potential to learn. Thats why the logical thing to do is to pursue an undergraduate career and find a job. And this carries into the working world. They feel cheated that whatever they studied and learnt for the past 22 years of life was nothing. It was just a means to test how memory friendly the students were.

The biz men are pissed off with the idea of business in our country. Costs are high, rent is high. Almost all huge corporations are nationalized. Owned by the sovereign wealth fund, Mr T.

Students dont even think abt starting up a business. They are not meant to do so. They are meant to be products of the system. They are meant to chase for grades, they are meant to chase for jobs and the most important, money.

The issue here is globalisation and the power travel. If we did not know, whats the meaning of living and learning when we go overseas, we Sporeans would be trapped in this Kingdom. If we want to learn, we cant stay here any longer.

The reason is simple : we have to chase personal success from day one. I think one way we can do it. We need to open up our education system.

Students need to work when they are in junior college. Junior College serves no academic purpose other than knowledge. Or maybe junior college is too early to start working. Maybe All students have to under take a 6 month internship once completing their junior college education. This will give them an idea of working. Let them break free from the study mania we have built ourselves.

Once our older generation moves on, I think the youth will finally create change. We need to open up many elements in our education system. We cant quantify and assess learning. I give this government another 10 years. Let the founders move on.

Singapore Inc is currently in the start up stage. We have reached the point whereby the Human Resource has peaked, reached their threshold of work load and satisfaction. Change is imminent. As long as the Asian mentality is rampant, of always looking at value and being practical, the govt leaders might change, but the rest might be tough to change.

I think there is a silent undertone, a brewing disaster in the offing. The youth of Singapore want to speak up. The online media is being watched by the MDA and what have you. We are trapped? Could be, i dont think so but maybe.

Ultimately, the system worked 44 years ago when we needed leadership and guidance. Now we want to take responsibility of our own destiny and we want to kick start an enterprise...

I say I will.

Silent thoughts..

Had a meet up with my fellow SIFErs yesterday for dinner, got me thinking on the journey back..

What defines a friendship? Time, an experience, a feeling, an emotion. I guess friendship can be kickstarted based on a common experience, feeling or emotion and more imptly, it is sustained thru time. Makes sense rite. I will still stick to my timeless definition of a friendship : If you are criticized by your friend, and you dont feel insulted. Then you got a friendship there.

More importantly, I guess at times it's human nature to be selfish but being human also allows us to be selfless as well. Thus, if attending someone's birthday party puts a smile on the face of the birthday girl/guy, then go for it. Haha. It's as simple as that.

As we keep on travelling our journey of life, in fact I keep on asking alot of qns abt many issues. The thing is not all are readily answered by your close ones. Some of them have to be answered by you. You can find the answer or leave it to chance. Sometimes, even planning might not even see u achieving the intended goal.

Well, lets see how it goes. For now, Chak DE!!!

Its Simple..

It's very strange with some of the locals i meet nowadays and their facial expressions.. Some are just so drained of their emotions that they cant even express themselves facially.. I mean its no difference between a smile and a scowl.

Come on and rck awauyfoor 209.
